Australian Report Says Wrongful Deportation Covered Up

update

An Australian government report says immigration officers wrongfully deported an Australian woman to the Philippines and covered up the mistake for years.

The report by former Victoria state Police Commissioner Neil Comrie called the handling of Vivien Alvarez Solon's case "catastrophic." Ms. Solon was mistakenly deported to the Philippines in 2001 and was eventually found living in a hospice (care center for the dying). She remains the Philippines while lawyers negotiate a compensation package for her from the Australian government.

The report said three senior officers who knew about the mistake made no attempts to correct it. Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone says one of the officers accused in the cover up has resigned, and the other two are under investigation. But she said no criminal charges are expected to be filed.

Some information for this report provided by AFP and Reuters.
