Austria Captures World Cup Team Ski Event in Are


Austria has captured the team ski event at the World Cup finals in Are, Sweden, by finishing ahead of the American and Swedish teams.

Eight teams entered Sunday's event, which was comprised of three men and three women from each nation combining to race eight times. There were four rounds of slalom skiing and four rounds of super-G, with the winners determined by a complicated points ranking system.

In addition, Austria topped the overall World Cup Nations Cup standings, finishing with more than twice as many points as the second-placed United States (15,449 to 6,541). Italy finished a distant third (4,892).

Austria also captured the men's standings with 7, 501 points, well ahead of the United States (3339) and Italy (3089). The Austrians dominated the women's standings as well, tallying 7,948 points, more than the second-placed Sweden (3298) and the third-placed United States (3202) combined.
