Bollywood Star Nirupa Roy Dies at 73


Veteran Indian actress Nirupa Roy, who was known for her motherly roles, died late Wednesday following a heart attack at her home. She was 73.

Mrs. Roy acted in more than 280 movies over five decades and won several national awards.

She made her film debut in Gujarati-language films in 1946 and then went on to act in Bollywood, as India's movie industry based in Bombay is known.

Mrs. Roy shot to fame in 1953 in the Hindi movie Do Bigha Zameen (A Small Plot of Land). Among her best-known films are Deewar (Wall), and Muqadar ka Sikandar (King of Fate).
