Brazilian Architect Awarded Pritzker Prize

Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha has been named this year's winner of the Pritzker Prize.

The U.S.-based Hyatt Hotel chain which awards the architecture prize announced its decision Sunday.

Mendes da Rocha is to be presented the award during a ceremony in Istanbul, Turkey, next month.

Among Mendes da Rocha's most celebrated works are the Sculpture Museum and the Patriarch Plaza in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

In addition to designing buildings, he taught for several years at the University of Sao Paulo.

Mendes da Rocha is the second Brazilian to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Oscar Niemeyer, who helped design the nation's capital, Brasilia, was given the award in 1988.
