Cricket: S. African Vice Captain Withdraws from Tour of India

South African cricket vice captain Nicky Boje as withdrawn from this month's tour of India because he is afraid of being detained on match-fixing charges.

The left-arm spin bowler wanted assurances that he would not be arrested. South Africa's chief envoy Desmond Nxiweni had met with the Delhi Police commissioner but did not get the assurances he wanted. Batsman Herschelle Gibbs has also decided not to tour India, reportedly because he too is afraid of being arrested.

Indian police are probing the players' involvement in a match-fixing scandal that dates back to 2000. Former South African captain Hansie Cronje was also involved in the scandal and admitted taking money from bookmakers and paying some players - including Gibbs - to perform poorly. Cronje was banned from cricket for life and died in a plane crash in 2002.
