Greece Says Long-Delayed Acropolis Museum Will Open at End of 2007

update

Greek Culture Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis says a long-delayed new Acropolis museum in Athens will open by the end of 2007.

The museum was originally scheduled to open for the 2004 Summer Olympics.

But legal problems and the discovery of ancient ruins on the construction site led to multiple delays.

Greek officials say the museum will house artifacts from the temples of the Acropolis, including the Parthenon. Some of the displays have never been seen in public.

Voulgarakis says he is still hoping to obtain for the museum the ancient Elgin Marbles, once located in the Parthenon.

The blocks are on display in London's British Museum. Greece has been pressing for their return.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
