Thousands of pilgrims took part Saturday evening, the eve of Easter Sunday, in the Holy Fire ceremony that symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Led by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Ireneos, clergy descended into an underground tomb below the church where Christ is believed to have been be buried. The patriarch then emerged with a flaming torch, symbolizing Christ as the light of the world.
