Pakistani Police Kill Suspect in Daniel Pearl Murder

Pakistani police say they have shot dead a suspected militant wanted in connection with the murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl nearly three years ago.

Police officials say Asim Ghafoor was killed Wednesday in Karachi as he tried to flee after police raided his hideout. A reward of more than $8,000 had been offered for his capture.

Police say the suspect was an associate of British-born militant Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, who has been sentenced to death for masterminding the kidnapping and murder of the journalist.

Mr. Pearl was abducted in January 2002 while researching a story, and later was found dead in Karachi. Authorities say Asim Ghafoor also was a member of an outlawed Islamic group fighting Indian rule in Kashmir.
