Protesters Barricade Streets During Sao Tome Election

update

Protesters in the west African nation of Sao Tome and Principe blockaded roads around some polling stations Sunday and prevented voters from casting ballots in the general election.

The protesters used fallen trees and rocks to block streets around the polling places. Officials say they will try to hold elections next week at the affected sites.

The protests had the potential to affect several thousand of the 79,000 people eligible to vote.

Political instability and corruption has plagued the island nation and has delayed efforts to develop offshore oil revenues.
