Serbian Authorities Say Defendant in Srebrenica Case Admits Guilt

Serbian authorities say a former member of a paramilitary unit has admitted taking part in the massacre of thousands of Muslims after the 1995 Serb capture of Srebrenica .

In a statement read into the record by a judge, Pero Petrasevic told investigators he had shot two of six Muslim detainees on the orders of Slobodan Medic, the commander of his paramilitary unit, the Scorpions. The judge read the statement after the accused refused to enter a plea. The commander Tuesday had denied any knowledge of the crime.

The two men and three others are on trial before a special court in Belgrade. Authorities arrested them after prosecutors at The Hague tribunal trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic showed a videotape of them executing six men captured in Srebrenica..

Serb forces executed about 8,000 Muslim men and boys in northeast Bosnia-Herzegovina after capturing the Muslim enclave.
