Tennis: Lindsay Davenport Reclaims No. 1 Ranking

update

American tennis player Lindsay Davenport will reclaim the No. 1 world ranking when the WTA Tour standings are officially released next week.

Davenport rallied from a first-set loss and saved two match points in her second-round win over Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia at the Zurich Open, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. It will be Davenport's eighth period as the top-ranked player after first claiming the spot in October of 1998.

Meantime, Amalie Mauresmo of France bowed out of a tournament early for the second week in a row. Mauresmo failed to provide much of a challenge Thursday in her 6-2, 6-0 loss to Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik. Last week, the world No. 4 player lost in the first round in Moscow, also winning just two games in a straight-sets loss.

Italy's Flavia Pennetta joined Davenport in the quarterfinals in Zurich, battling from behind to defeat Bulgaria's Sesil Karatantcheva, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
