US Democrats, Republicans Deploy Lawyers for Possible Election Battles

Democrats and Republicans have deployed thousands of lawyers across the United States to deal with potential election day problems.

Democrats have reportedly hired more than 10,000 attorneys. Republicans have not said how many they have hired, but analysts say the number is likely comparable.

The lawyers are being assembled to monitor the polls for fraud or intimidation.

They also will be on hand in the event of a voter recount in one or more states.

In 2000, both Democrats and Republicans scrambled to amass lawyers for a recount in Florida. The ensuing dispute went all the way to the Supreme Court.

Analysts say this election year is shaping up to be the most litigious ever, with scores of lawsuits filed in multiple states over issues including absentee ballots, electronic voting and voter registration.
