Tennis: Federer, Hewitt Advance to US Open Quarterfinals

update

Men's quarterfinal action headlines play Thursday at the U.S. Open in New York, with world number one men's player Roger Federer and former champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia leading the action.

Federer takes on Argentina's David Nalbandian, who has a winning record against the Swiss star. The two players have met seven times before - including at the 2003 U.S. Open - with Nalbandian winning five of the contests. However, Federer won their last meeting at the 2004 Australian Open.

Meanwhile, Lleyton Hewitt takes on Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in a quarterfinal match. Hewitt, the 2001 U.S. Open champion, has beaten Nieminen both times they have played in the past.

The winners of Thursday's matches will meet Saturday in the men's semifinals. The other semifinal has American veteran Andre Agassi taking on countryman Robby Ginepri.
