Vatican Needs to Help Find War Crimes Suspect, says UN Prosecutor

The chief prosecutor of the U.N. war crimes tribunal says the Vatican is not doing enough to help capture a fugitive Croatian general.

Carla del Ponte says she believes Catholic monasteries in Croatia are either helping or harboring General Ante Gotovina. She says she has asked top church officials and Pope Benedict for help, but has received no answer.

Vatican officials say they have asked Ms. del Ponte to provide evidence that General Gotovina is hiding in church buildings so they can they can contact the relevant officials on the matter. But, they say, she failed to provide them with any information.

General Gotovina is charged with a role in the deaths of civilians during a 1995 offensive through a Serb-held area of Croatia. Ms. del Ponte has also accused Croatia of not doing enough to track him down.
