Officials say six suicide attackers detonated bombs outside the building Sunday in Maidan Shahr, the capital of Wardak province, which lies 25 kilometers from Kabul.
At least four soldiers guarding the compound were killed and five attackers died in the assault. More than 12 civilians were also wounded.
Elsewhere in the country, provincial Afghan officials say an apparent NATO airstrike has killed at least nine civilians, in an incident disputed by NATO officials.
The police chief of eastern Kunar province said Sunday women and children were among the victims in the strike late Saturday.
Another local official said at least 15 people were killed, including both insurgents and civilians.
NATO officials dispute the accounts, saying they have no reports of civilian deaths, and that a precision strike killed 10 militants.
