Afghan President Hamid Karzai is pledging relief to people affected by last week's massive landslide in the country's northeast.

Hundreds of people in the village of Abi Barik in Badakhshan province were buried when the side of a mountain collapsed following days of heavy rain. At least 2,000 people have been displaced in one of the worst natural disasters to hit Afghanistan.

On Wednesday, President Karzai visited relief camps in the region and promised food, water and new shelters for landslide victims.

Tensions have been high, with many claiming aid has been slow to reach the remote area. Clashes have also broken out with people fighting over food and other supplies.

An exact death toll is not yet known. Estimates have ranged from at least 250 killed to 2,700 dead in the landslide.

The United Nations says recent floods caused by melting snow and heavy rain have killed hundreds of people and displaced more than 70,000 others throughout Afghanistan.

Badakhshan is one of the remotest provinces in Afghanistan, bordering China, Tajikistan and Pakistan.
