At Least 50 Killed in Train Accident in Spain

Spanish authorities say at least 50 people have been killed and many more injured in a train accident in northern Spain.

A regional official says the train derailed late Wednesday near a station outside the city of Santiago de Compostela.

Television footage showed smoke rising from the scene, and bodies covered by blankets alongside the tracks next to damaged train cars.

The train originated in Madrid and was bound for the northwestern town of Ferrol, as Spain's Galicia region was preparing for a Christian festival in honor of Saint James.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear, but authorities are investigating.
