Attackers Kill 5 Police Officers in Indian Kashmir

Indian officials say suspected separatist rebels shot and killed at least five police officers in Indian-controlled Kashmir before staging an attack on an army camp.

Police say the attackers stormed a police station in the town of Hiranagar on Thursday. Officials say the attackers sprayed the station with bullets before hijacking a truck to make their escape.

The same group later attacked a nearby army camp, where a firefight is still going on. Reports say five security officers have been wounded at the army camp.

Hiranagar is some 200 kilometers south of Srinagar, the main city in Indian Kashmir.

India and Pakistan both claim Kashmir in its entirety. Rebel groups have been fighting Indian rule in the area since 1989.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are expected to meet on the Kashmir issue this week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
