COVID - Barbershops -- USAGM
update
African Americans are nearly four times more likely to die of COVID-19 than whites, by one estimate. ((https://www.apmresearchlab.org/covid/deaths-by-race )) But polls show more Blacks than whites say they will not get a coronavirus vaccine when one becomes available. ((one example: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/05/21/most-americans-expect-a-covid-19-vaccine-within-a-year-72-say-they-would-get-vaccinated/ )) A history of racism in medicine means trust in the health system is lower among African Americans. To help overcome those barriers, health officials are turning to a respected institution in the Black community: barbershops. VOA's Steve Baragona has more.
