Pop-diva singing sensation Beyoncé has announced plans to fund a college scholarship in celebration of the one-year anniversary of her most recent album, “Lemonade.”
The Formation Scholars Awards says its goal is to “encourage and support young women who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious and confident,” according to a statement on her website.
The $25,000 scholarships are available for the 2017-2018 academic year and will be awarded to one female student at each of the four participating schools: Howard University, Spellman College, Berklee College of Music and Parsons School of Design. Two of the schools, Howard University and Spellman College, are historically black colleges (HBCUs).
The scholarship is available to incoming, current or graduate students studying creative arts, music, literature or African-American studies.
Applicants must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and write an essay on how Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” album has inspired their educational goals.
The visual album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and went on to become the best-selling album of 2016, winning dozens of accolades including two Grammy awards and a prestigious Peabody award.
