Officials say a boat carrying 32 tourists sank Saturday off the coast of Nicaragua, killing 13 passengers, all of them Costa Rican, most of them women.
Nicaraguan spokeswoman Rosario Murillo said “This is a great tragedy, truly painful, because they were our Costa Rican, Central American brothers and sisters who were vacationing in the waters of the Nicaraguan Caribbean.”
Surviving passengers include Costa Ricans, Americans and Nicaraguans.
Officials say the boat sailed despite being warned that it should not because of inclement weather.
The tourists were visiting the Corn Islands, about 70 kilometers off of Nicaragua’s mainland.
Authorities say the boat’s captain, who is also the owner of the vessel, has been arrested.
