Britain to Demand Cash Bond from Some Visitors

Despite widespread objections, the British government has decided to go ahead with a plan to demand that visitors from six of its former colonies post a cash bond to obtain visas.

The move is aimed at curbing illegal immigration.

The British Home Office confirmed in an email to the Associated Press Monday that the rule will affect visitors from Ghana, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nigeria. It did not confirm reports that the bonds could amount to $4,600 per visitor.

British immigration officials say the countries targeted have a high proportion of people who overstay their visas.

The Home Office said forfeited money will be used to ease the burden that illegal immigrants put on public services.

It is not clear when the requirement will be put into effect.
