Burma to Raise Price of Phone Calls

Burmese officials say the country will more than double the cost of local telephone calls in 2010.

Unnamed officials say that starting January 1, the price of local landline calls will increase from 15 kyats (1.5 cents) per minute to 50 kyats (5 cents) per minute.

The price of mobile telephone calls that now cost 25 kyats (2.5 cents) per minute will double.

Officials say the rates for international calls will remain the same.

Burma's government-run media have yet to announce the changes.
