Christians Mark Good Friday

Christians around the world on Friday marked the crucifixion of Jesus. The day is known as Good Friday.

Christian pilgrims in Jerusalem's Old City walked along the route believed to be taken by Jesus on the way to his crucifixion.

They carried wooden crosses and followed the 14 stations of the cross, ending at the ancient Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Tradition says the church was built on the site where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected.

Devotees in the northern Philippines Friday were nailed to wooden crosses to re-enact the crucifixion, as thousands of spectators watched the bloody annual rite. Church leaders and health officials do not sanction the vivid re-enactment.

At the Vatican, Pope Francis attended the "Passion of the Lord" service in St. Peter's Basilica. The Vatican's official preacher gave the service, one of the few times of the year when the pope listens to a sermon, instead of preaches.

On Sunday, the pope will deliver Easter Mass. Easter is the day that Christians believe Jesus resurrected from the dead.
