Connecticut Huskies Down Kentucky Wildcats for US College Basketball Title

  • VOA News

Connecticut celebrates with the championship trophy after beating Kentucky 60-54 at the NCAA Final Four tournament college basketball championship game Monday, April 7, 2014.
The Connecticut Huskies defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 60-54 to win the U.S. men's college basketball championship in Dallas, Texas.

In a game featuring two of the most storied programs in the country, the Huskies led from the start, pushing their lead to 15 at one point in the first half of the National Collegiate Athletic Association title game.

But Kentucky, which started five freshman, staged a furious comeback and trailed Connecticut 35-31 at the half.

The Wildcats closed to within one point midway through the second half, but missed numerous free throws at critical times that would have given them the lead.

The championship is Connecticut's fourth title since 1999, and comes one year after the NCAA banned the Huskies from the annual tournament because of a poor graduation rate.

The undefeated Connecticut women's team could give the school a sweep of this season's NCAA Division I basketball championships when it takes on Notre Dame in Nashville, Tennessee Tuesday night.
