The number of street crimes in India’s New Delhi surged in the first half of 2014.

Crime statistics for the period from January 1 to July 15 show more roughly three times the number of robberies this year in Delhi over last year in the same period.

There were 2,988 robberies during the period this year compared to fewer than 1,000 last year.

Police in the Indian capital are often themselves attacked trying to stop robberies in progress on the street.

Authorities blame the influx of an increasing number people into the capital region for the spike in street crime, but others suggest the problem is rooted in socio-economic and cultural differences.
