DRC Peace Accord Signing Set for February 24

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has sent out invitations to a February 24 signing ceremony for a peace deal ending two decades of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A U.N. spokesman, speaking Saturday, said Mr. Ban will attend the ceremony in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The signing was delayed last month after regional concerns arose over who would command a new multi-national intervention force that would deploy in eastern Congo to face off against armed groups in the war-torn region.

The peace deal is an effort to install a large-scale political framework to end regional fighting. Separate talks are under way in Uganda between the rebel group M23 and Congolese officials.
