Quito, Equador
Police in the United States have arrested a former head of Ecuadorian police wanted for crimes against humanity.

Authorities say retired general Edgar Vaca was taken into police custody in Washington at the request of Interpol and will be deported to Ecuador.

Vaca is wanted for crimes committed against three guerrilla fighters in the 1980s. He is one of 10 retired police and army officers suspected of torturing and sexually violating the men and women.

The Ecuadorian government has confirmed his arrest.
