Egypt Court Considers Mubarak Appeal

An Egyptian appeals court is considering a request to grant parole to former president Hosni Mubarak who has been detained since April 2011 on corruption and other charges.

Mr. Mubarak's lawyer made the appeal on grounds that the 84-year-old ex-president has already spent two years in prison without conviction, exceeding the maximum term for temporary detention.

A court session to retry Mr. Mubarak ended abruptly Saturday when the judge handed the case back to an appeals court. The former president was sentenced to life in prison last year, a verdict that was later overturned by another court.

Mr. Mubarak's conviction centered on failing to protect protesters against violence during an uprising which overthrew him. He also faces separate corruption charges.

Mr. Mubarak is being held at a military hospital in a Cairo suburb. His lawyers say he is suffering from a variety of physical ailments.
