Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush has been moved out of intensive care and into a regular room at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

The 88-year-old former president entered the hospital last month for bronchitis and was moved into intensive care last Sunday after developing a fever.

A Bush family spokesman says the former president's condition is improving, noting he was singing and joking with visitors. The spokesman says the family thanks everyone for their prayers and good wishes.

Bush served as the 41st president from 1989 to 1993 after a long career as a congressman, ambassador to the United Nations and China, and head of the Central Intelligence Agency. He was Ronald Reagan's vice president from 1981 until 1989 and is the father of the 43rd president, George W. Bush.
