Despite nearly 6,000 airstrikes by a U.S.-led coalition, Islamic State militants expanded the borders of their self-declared caliphate in the last year. The map below shows how territorial control has shifted, with notable gains in central Syria and western Iraq, as well as losses near the Syrian border with Turkey.
