Kenyan Police Arrest 650 After Eastleigh Blasts

Police in Kenya's capital have arrested more than 650 people following explosions that killed at least six people on Monday.

Kenyan newspapers say police carried out nighttime raids in the Eastleigh section of Nairobi, where the blasts struck two restaurants and a women's health clinic Monday.

The member of parliament from the area, Yusuf Hassan Abdi, tells VOA that he wants police to conduct a thorough security operation while not committing abuses.

"We have to call upon the government to protect the innocent, to protect the human rights of the people of the constituency, and not to punish the people of Eastleigh collectively, to profile the population and to carry out a fishing expedition. That we would not want to see."

In a statement Tuesday, Kenyan Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Lenku called the bombings "barbaric" and said the security operation will continue until those responsible for the bombings are caught.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which wounded at least 25 people.

The Somali militant group al-Shabab has long threatened to attack Kenya unless the country withdraws its troops from southern Somalia.

Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack on Nairobi's Westgate Mall last September, in which at least 67 people were killed.
