Kerry: 'Enthusiastic' Saudi Support for Mideast Peace

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says he is using Saudi Arabia's Arab Peace Initiative as part of his framework for a deal between Israelis and Palestinians.

Kerry made a brief visit to Riyadh Sunday for talks with Saudi King Abdullah, who Kerry says enthusiastically supports peace efforts.

The king's 2002 Arab Peace Initiative includes normalized relations between Arab states and Israel, and a complete Israeli withdrawal from all territories seized since 1967.

Kerry did not specify which parts of the initiative he is incorporating into his framework.

Kerry has been in Israel since Thursday for separate meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. He said years of mistrust are making the process difficult and complicated.

The secretary said all the major issues -- borders, security, Palestinian refugees and Jerusalem -- are under discussion. Kerry said both sides have a better idea of the compromises needed to secure an agreement.

Kerry also spent an hour Sunday with Jordan's King Abdullah in Amman discussing the peace talks, Syria's civil war and violence in Iraq.

He said the United States supports the Iraqi government as it battles against al-Qaida militants who have taken control of two towns in Anbar province. But he said the U.S. will not send any troops to Iraq, calling the battle "their fight."

Kerry also suggested that Iran might play a role at the peace talks on Syria that are scheduled to take place later this month in Geneva.
