President Donald Trump is delivering his first State of the Union address. His address is highlighting a strong economy and call for bipartisan action on immigration. The televised speech before a joint session of Congress comes a year after Trump took office and about a week after a three-day government shutdown spawned by a fight over the federal government budget and how to deal with hundreds of thousands of immigrants who years ago came to the country illegally as children.

To applause, Trump introduces Congressman Steve Scalise, a U.S. congressman from Louisiana who was among four people shot last year during a Republican congressional baseball practice.

On the day of the shooting, Trump says, “We came together, not as Republicans or Democrats but as representatives of the people.”

Trump calls on lawmakers to “set aside our differences” and find common ground.

Beginning his address, Donald Trump sums up what he sees as the accomplishments of his first year in office. He says his administration has moved forward with a "clear vision and righteous mission to make American great again for all Americans."

President Donald Trump has entered the House of Representatives chamber at the U.S. Capitol, to applause -- mainly from one side of the chamber -- for his first State of the Union Address.

In a break from recent tradition, Donald Trump's wife, Melania Trump, arrived at the Capitol separately from her husband, according to media reports. White House officials played down the significance of the separate travel, however, saying Melania Trump wanted to greet guests beforehand.
