Mandela Continues to Improve

The health of former South African President Nelson Mandela continues to improve.

Mr. Mandela, hospitalized since Wednesday, is being treated for pneumonia.

The office of President Jacob Zuma said late Sunday the government has been advised Mandela had a "restful day" and continues to make "further progress" in his recuperation.

Churches across South Africa held Easter Sunday prayers for the former president's recovery from his third hospitalization in four months.

Concern runs high among admirers of the frail, 94-year-old Nobel Peace laureate in South Africa, where he is considered a national hero, and elsewhere around the world.

Mr. Mandela has been vulnerable to respiratory problems since contracting tuberculosis during his 27-year imprisonment for fighting apartheid, South Africa's white racist rule.

He became South Africa's first black president in 1994.
