More Than 300 Killed in Bangladesh Building Collapse

Protesting garment workers took the streets of Dhaka Friday, to demonstrate against the country's poor industrial safety standards, as the death toll from the collapse of a Bangladesh garment factory building climbed above 300.

Officials say the latest death toll stands at 304, with fears that the number could rise as emergency workers continue to dig through rubble of the eight-story building.

Rescue crews continue to work non-stop. Emergency responders say they saved at least 72 people Friday, with rescuers finding 41 people alive in one place.

Police say the owner of the building and factory managers ignored official warnings for people to evacuate the building after inspectors found cracks in it Tuesday. The owner is on the run. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promises he will be caught and punished.

More than 3,000 people were in the building outside Dhaka when it collapsed.

At least 2,000 people have been rescued. More than 1,000 were injured. Authorities do not know exactly how many people are missing.

Hundreds of textile workers clashed with police Thursday. Some workers blame European and American companies for the poor working conditions because the companies demand low-cost goods from the garment manufacturers.

A fire at another garment factory in Bangladesh killed more than 100 workers in November.
