North Korea fired artillery shells late Tuesday into the waters of its coast.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea fired about 100 shells off its west coast and another 150 shells off its east coast.

South Korea called the launches a “clear violation” of a 2018 agreement meant to reduce tensions between the two countries.

A statement carried by North Korean state media said it acted in response to “military provocation” by South Korea earlier Tuesday.

Some information for this report came from The Associated Press, Agence France-Presse and Reuters.
