A knife-wielding attacker killed a schoolgirl and an adult, while wounding another 17 people, during a rampage near Tokyo on Tuesday.
A group of schoolgirls were waiting at a bus stop in the city of Kawasaki along with a group of commuters when a man carrying a knife in each hand began slashing at the crowd, yelling, “I will kill you.”
Japanese national broadcaster NHK says the suspected attacker, a man in his 50s, died after stabbing himself in the neck. The victims were identified as a 12-year-old schoolgirl and a 39-year-old man, a parent of one of the girls. Three of those wounded suffered serious injuries.
Police have not discovered a motive for the attack.
U.S. President Donald Trump offered his condolences to the Japanese people before departing Japan at the end of a four-day official visit.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said, "It is a very harrowing case. I feel strong anger. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the victims and hope the injured recover quickly."
Japan has one of the world’s lowest rates of violent crimes, but it is no stranger to high-profile killings. One such incident occurred in 2016, when a man broke into a facility for the disabled and stabbed 19 patients to death.
