Plane Crash Kills 13 in Nigeria

Officials in Nigeria say at least 13 people died Thursday when a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Lagos.

Nigeria's emergency management agency says the plane experienced engine trouble and went down near a fuel depot at Lagos's domestic airport.

The chartered flight, operated by Nigeria's Associated Airlines, was flying to the town of Akure in Ondo state.

There were 20 people aboard the plane, including crew members. The aircraft was also carrying the body of a former Ondo state governor to his funeral.

Aviation officials say the plane's flight recorder has been recovered.

A deadly plane crash last year renewed concerns about aviation safety in the country. All 153 people died in June of 2012 when a Dana Airlines jet crashed into a Lagos neighborhood nine kilometers from the airport.
