Police Suspend Investigation of University of Virginia Rape

Police in Virginia say they are suspending an investigation into allegations of a gang rape at the University of Virginia reported in a Rolling Stone magazine article last year.

Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said during a news conference Monday that police could not confirm that an incident occurred. He said police had multiple interviews with a student identified only as "Jackie,'' who claimed she was gang-raped at a campus fraternity house in 2012, but that she refused to cooperate with investigators.

"This does not mean something terrible did not happen to Jackie," said Longo. "We’re just not able to gather sufficient facts to determine what that is."

He said the investigation would be suspended until someone provides information that would change the course of the investigation.

Rolling Stone described the gang rape in an article published in November that went viral online, but soon after discrepancies were found in it.

Rolling Stone has apologized and said it would conduct a review into its reporting practices.

Some material for this report came from AP.
