Rebels in the Central African Republic on Monday attacked an army base near the country's border with Sudan.
The army said it fought off the attack in the northeastern town of Birao and is now in control of the base.
No casualty toll from the battle was available. There are also conflicting reports about which rebel group led the attack.
Several rebel movements have signed a peace agreement with the government of President Francois Bozize.
The CAR has been plagued with coups and military revolts since winning independence from France in 1960.
In more recent years, the government has also struggled to subdue rebel groups and control the spillover of violence from Sudan's Darfur region.
The United Nations has peacekeeping troops in the CAR and neighboring Chad to provide security for internally displaced people in those two nations as well as to help refugees from Darfur.
The Central African Republic is expected to hold presidential elections later this year. President Bozize has been in power since ousting former President Ange-Felix Patasse in a 2003 military coup.
