Afghan officials say Taliban insurgents have killed at least 16 people in eastern Afghanistan, with some civilians reported to be among the victims.
Provincial Governor Musa Khan Akbarzada said militants infiltrated a police checkpoint in Andar district on Tuesday and killed 10 members of the local militia and at least six civilians. Details of their deaths are unclear, but there are some reports that the victims were poisoned before being shot to death.
The provincial governor has not confirmed that they were poisoned. An investigation is underway.
The Taliban claimed responsibility, in a statement to the French news agency, AFP.
