Afghan officials say the Taliban have kidnapped a provincial election candidate in northern Afghanistan.
The governor of Sar-i-Pul province told reporters Monday that Hussain Nazari and at least six of his supporters were abducted at gunpoint while traveling in a taxi to the provincial capital.
The abduction is the latest violence in the run-up to elections Saturday in which voters will cast ballots for a successor to Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Voters will also elect members of the country's 34 provincial councils.
Afghan security forces are said to be searching for Nazari and his entourage.
Elsewhere in the north, authorities say a roadside bomb targeting a local anti-Taliban leader, Mohammad Omar, killed at least five people in Kunduz province. Omar was not hurt.
In eastern Afghanistan, another roadside bomb killed at least four people in Paktia province on Monday.
