The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo says at least 35 people were killed in an attack by rebels on a mining hub in the country's southeast.
In a statement it says Mai Mai separatist fighters armed with bows and machetes attacked the town of Lubumbashi, the capital of copper-rich Katanga province Saturday.
The U.N. says at least 35 people were killed in the violence while 54 other were injured, among them rebel fighters.
The statement says some 245 Mai Mai fighters surrendered following the attack.
