United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has laid a wreath in honor of the more than 100 peacekeepers killed last year in missions around the world.

Ban marked the annual International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in New York Thursday by saying the U.N. is recommitting itself to ensuring that their contributions will never be forgotten.

Under-Secretary-General Herve Ladsous said the peacekeepers did not die just for an ideal. He said they made a practical difference on the ground wherever they served.

One-hundred-and-six peacekeepers were killed in 2013 in places including Sudan's Darfur region , South Sudan, Mali, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

More than 116,000 U.N. peacekeepers currently serve in 16 operations across the globe.
