Lee Michael Katz

Lee Michael Katz is an award-winning journalist, analyst and author.

Currently a prominent freelance writer, Katz is the former Senior Diplomatic Correspondent of USA Today and International Editor of UPI News Service.

Based in the Washington, D.C. area, he has reported from more than 60 countries.  Katz’s expertise includes foreign policy and diplomacy, peace talks, national security, terrorism, weapons of mass destruction policy, foundation grants, business and financial topics.

He has written for publications and web sites that include The Washington Post, National Journal, Salon.com, The Guardian, Columbia Journalism Review, Congressional Quarterly’s Global Researcher, The AARP Bulletin, Carnegie Results, Global Security Newswire and many others.

Lee Michael Katz’s work has been syndicated internationally by The New York Times Syndicate.

In 2007, he won a Stanley Foundation Reporting Project Journalism Award toward coverage of the United States and Europe.

His policy analysis op-eds have been printed in most major American newspapers, including The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Detroit News, Seattle Times, and numerous others.

At UPI and USA Today, he regularly traveled around the world with Presidents and Secretaries of State. Washingtonian Magazine described him as authoritative” in an article on top journalists in Washington.

Before that, he was a special correspondent for The Washington Post. Katz contributed regularly to the Outlook Section, as well as The Washington Post magazine and other areas of the newspaper, ranging from news to business.

His worldwide media appearances include CNN, BBC and C-Span as well as other foreign, national and local television and radio programs and news shows.

He is the author of the popular biography, My Name Is Geraldine Ferraro, with an initial press run of 200,000 copies.

Katz is known for his exclusive interviews, which have been reprinted in college-level textbooks, including The Writer’s Roles and Behind The Scenes In American Government.

His interviews include worldwide figures that range from current Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, former President Jimmy Carter, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Britain’s Margaret Thatcher, South Africa’s Desmond Tutu and Madeleine Albright.

Lee Michael Katz began his full-time career at Virginia’s suburban Journal newspapers in the Washington, D.C. area. He won Virginia Press awards for news writing and investigative reporting.

Katz holds a master’s degree from Columbia University.
