Ultranationalist Russian Writer is Released from Prison - 2003-06-30

Russian ultranationalist writer Eduard Limonov, who leads the small radical National Bolshevik Party, has been released from prison on parole.

News media reports say Mr. Limonov walked out of a prison in the southern Russian city of Saratov early Monday after serving more than half of a four-year sentence for illegal possession of weapons.

Speaking to reporters after his release, Mr. Limonov said he will continue work in politics. He said will try to change the political system altogether and "to uproot the tradition of Russian slavery."

Limonov and five members of his National Bolshevik party were convicted on weapons charges but the court dropped several of the more serious allegations, including attempting to overthrow the government.

Limonov was arrested in Altai in April 2001 on the weapons charge. He was sentenced to four years in prison in April of last year.

National Bolshevik Party claims to champion the cause of ethnic Russians.
