Iraqi Kurdish officials say at least 12,000 people have crossed the border from Syria, seeking safety in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The influx of refugees started three weeks ago after Turkey and its allied Syrian militia fighters began a military offensive against Syrian Kurdish fighters.
