The 19th century gold rush that built Johannesburg left many abandoned mines in the city that still lure hundreds of people every day who enter them illegally searching for what little gold that remains. Despite a growing number of lethal accidents, unemployed miners and others risk their lives to earn income from what they find in the mines. The problem has become so serious that the South African Department of Mineral Resources is revising its policy on illegal mining. More from Emilie Iob in Johannesburg.
