Water used in mining cannot be diverted to irrigation until it is purged of toxic metals, such as lead or chromium, which is a costly process. But simple microbes can turn the metals' atoms from a toxic to a non-toxic form, transforming the runoff into water that is safe for plants. VOA's George Putic reports.
